At 0234hrs on October 2nd 2017, Rescue Squad 10, Engine 102, Ambulance 308 (Thurmont Community Ambulance Service), and Medic 30 (Frederick County Advanced Life Support) were dispatched to a Tractor Trailer Rollover on Route 15Northbound in the area of Route 550. While units were enroute Frederick County ECC advised units that Thurmont Police were on the scene and believed to have 1 trapped. Medic 30 arrived on the scene first and advised the accident was Route15 Northbound at North Franklinville Road and confirmed one tractor trailer rolled over in the median with 1 occupant still inside. Rescue Squad 10 and Engine 102 along with Assistant Chief 10 arrived on scene a short time later. The crews assisted the driver out of the cab via ladders. The driver of the Tractor Trailer was uninjured but was checked out by EMS as a precaution and refused transport.
The driver advised he had 800+ live turkeys on the truck. Some of the turkeys were thrown out from the trailer during the accident. Turkeys were laying in the median of the highway but however were not moving around. Frederick County Animal Control was requested to the scene to help haul away the turkeys. An empty trailer, along with 15 men arrived an hour later from the plant where the overturned trailer was headed in New Oxford, PA and loaded up the turkeys that had been thrown out. Maryland State Highway Coordinated Highways Response Team (CHART) arrived on scene to assist with traffic control. Engine 102 returned to service. Rescue Squad 10 remained on the scene to provide lightning and assistance with the Tow company on uprighting the tractor trailer.
1 lane on both the Northbound and Southbound side of Route 15 were shut down for approximately 5 hours while units remained on scene and the truck was uprighted. The truck was uprighted and all units cleared around 0730 hours.
